Campaign hots up as candidates are announced

The campaign trail is really starting to hot up in Burngreave, with the announcement that seven candidates are to stand in an election all hoping to become a voice for their community.

Burngreave New Deal for Communities (BNDfC) is holding the election so local residents can elect five members of the community to sit on the BNDfC partnership board.

The seven candidates from which five will be elected are: John Errington, Carol Jones, Faqir Khan, Ronnie Lewin, Abdulla Moqbel, Beryl Pack and Mohammed Younis.

The BNDfC Information Vehicle will be out and about on the streets of Burngreave for the election hustings which will give local people a chance to meet the candidates and hear what they have to say and what they want to do. The hustings are taking place on:

From the 20 June, ballot papers will be distributed to all homes in the BNDfC area. There will then be a three-week period in which people can post their vote, plus an additional opportunity to vote in person at the polling station at Abbeyfield Festival on 10 July

The Partnership Board has 25 places of which ten are for residents who are elected by local people. Every two years, five places are put up for election with those chosen carrying out a four-year term.

Those elected this year will join current members: Chair Rose Ardron, Aisha ‘Special K’ Wilson, Muhammad Iqbal, Dorett Buckley Greaves and Tony Hall.

Playing a vital role in BNDfC, the board is responsible for agreeing the priorities for the BNDfC area through consultation with local people and awarding funding to initiatives that tackle these priorities and make Burngreave a better place for people to live, work and play.

John Clarke, BNDfC Chief Executive, said: “We have seven really strong candidates so it is going to be a close race – we hope as many people as possible will come and support them and take part in the vote.”
