A special information day has been organised in Sheffield to help support refugees across the city.
Burngreave Refugee Day, which is being staged at Ellesmere Green on Saturday 24 June, from 2-6pm, has been set up to celebrate the contribution that refugees make to the local community.
Visitors will be able to access a wide range of information stalls and enjoy multi-cultural music, dance performances and food from around the world.
The event forms part of the city's Refugee Week – a seven day programme of activities starting on Saturday 17 June – and will raise money for ASSIST- SHEFFIELD, a charity that supports destitute asylum seekers.
It has been jointly organised and supported by Burngreave New Deal for Communities (BNDfC), Burngreave Community Action Trust (BCAT), Sheffield City Council, the Refugee Housing Association, North Sheffield Primary Care Trust and Burngreave Area Panel.
Ophelia Clarke, community development worker at BNDfC, said:
“This is the first event of its kind in Burngreave and we are pleased to be able to offer our support. There will be a range of activities available and a host of information for refugees and we look forward to seeing lots of people there on the day.”
Steve Cooke, from Burngreave Community Action Trust, said:
“BCAT is proud to be an active partner in delivering Burngreave's first major Refugee week event. We have much to celebrate in relation to the contribution that refugees and asylum seekers make to the community and this is just one way of saying thank you.”
Norah Brown, community development and health worker for North Sheffield Primary Care Trust, said:
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to contribute to what is a truly unique event. Representatives from the North Sheffield PCT will be there on the day to provide information on our work with the community and on how people can access vital health services.”
Other events planned as part of Refugee Week in Sheffield include a scenic walk, a volunteer fair, the launch screening of a short film about refugees, a Refugee Week party, an all-nations football competition and an African Odyssey concert.
