Bags and Cushions Making Course

Dec 2004 – February 2005

This course took place at Firshill Primary School. Ten sessions took place on a weekly basis. All the participants taking part were women and most were of Pakistani origin with children attending the school. Fourteen women arrived at the first session wanting to do the course, which was a great turn out.

As the course had two tutors leading on activities it was decided to allow the women to attend. After the first session there were no more than twelve women attending at one time. Every session was very busy with lots of activity taking place.

Textiles artists Louise Emm and Imogen Singer introduced techniques in Embroidery, Beading, Appliqué, Image Maker and making fringes and tassels. The women applied their new skills to make a range of bags and cushions.

The photographs on this page show work in progress and a selection of finished work. A representative from Sheffield Futures visited one of the final sessions to discuss further opportunities of adult learning. The family learning co-ordinator has also applied for further funding for a project to continue the course to further develop the participants’ skills.
