Green fingered residents of Burngreave are being offered a unique way to keep fit and healthy – and there isn't a treadmill in sight!

The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) Green Gym, a national charitable initiative, is helping local people to improve their health and well-being through activities such as installing a wooden bench in the park, tree-planting or working on a community garden.

It has been brought to the area by Burngreave New Deal for Communities (BNDfC) which is funding the project for the next three years. This year the project has been awarded £40,000.

Clare Mulhall, project officer for the Green Gym, said: "We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. People either volunteer for one of the sessions or are referred to us by their GP.

“Tasks include tree planting, shrub clearance and fence building throughout Burngreave's many green spaces. You don't need to be fit to join, you can start with more gentle tasks and build up your fitness gradually.”

Each session lasts between 2-4 hours with groups usually made up of about eight volunteers and two leaders. Families are welcome, although the Green Gym may be able to fund childcare costs if parents wish to take part without their children. There is also a women only session available.

Says Clare: "Research shows that doing half an hour on some of the Green Gym sessions can burn almost a third more calories than in a step aerobics class.

“People who take part in the sessions report feeling fitter and more energetic. There is some research to suggest that activity in the open air can help improve mental well being also, so it's a complete workout for mind and body.”

The sessions are free and are open to all residents in Burngreave. All you need to bring with you is a packed lunch and a drink – tea and coffee are provided at lunchtime.

You must wear clothes that you can work in and don't mind getting dirty – tools, gloves and other protective clothing will be provided as necessary. If you notify the team in advance, work boots can be provided if you do not have any sturdy shoes.

Magda Boo, health theme manager at BNDfC, said: "We are delighted to support a project which offers the chance for the residents of Burngreave to stay active and healthy in such a unique way.

“Burngreave New Deal for communities is always looking for innovative projects like this which will benefit our community.”
